“There’s got be a better way!” is a phrase many people have uttered, in a moment of shear frustration. That, in one sentence, is how we started this journey.
We were working on another project to help online publishers and could not find a good way to connect with bloggers. Beyond that we could not see a good way to find good blogs. Now, that might seem a little counter intuitive, given you can’t do a web search or visit a social media group without tripping over a blogger. While there is some truth to that, there is no quiet place on the internet to go with your favorite hot or cold beverage and discover and read good blogs.
Once we had our “There’s got be a better way!” moment we had to answer the question “What are you going to do about it?” (voiced “whad-yo-guna-do-aboud-it”). Since we are here together, you already know we decided to build a better blog discovery site.
Before jumping into the deep end, we took another look at finding good blogs, and still came to the conclusion, there is no really good place to easily find good blogs.
Of all the ways we looked at for finding blogs, the only serious contender for this was Pinterest. While it is a good platform for finding design and visually oriented blogs it leaves many areas of interest out in the cold. There are many topics that don’t play well on the image oriented Pinterest, technical blogs for software, data analysis, physiology, mindfulness etc. You can find these on Pinterest, but images do not come naturally to many subjects, leaving many of those blogs out of the game. That’s all we are going to say about Pinterest. Clearly we think we can offer readers and bloggers a better experience, or we would not be here.
If you are skeptical about how hard it is to find good blogs check out our blog post 10 Ways to Find Good Blogs – that Suck!
Here is what we think a good blog discovery site includes:
Blogs, just blogs, not news, not forums, not wikis, not corporate pages (company blogs allowed) and not directories. Just postings on the blog, not legal, shopping etc..
Blogs from all sources including, their own domains, hosted domains, and social media.
Browse by topic or search by keyword(s).
Links directly from our search results to the post.
Social feedback including: likes, views and subscriptions to provide feedback to readers and bloggers.
Reader subscriptions: Reader can select notifications and optionally emails of new posts for blogs they subscribe to.
Free to readers and bloggers.
Our goal is to offer readers the best blog browse and search features delivering as many quality blogs to readers as we can, for free. For blogger we strive to provide them as much traffic as we can while minimizing the work they do to get it.
